Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol used for network management, i.e. to monitor and configure devices on IP networks. This is quite clear, but this does not explains how to use SNMP, why is it so popular, and which SNMP version should you use?

To start working with SNMP you need to understand the SNMP terminology, the security and privacy features it provides (or does not provide), how the SNMP manager and agents interact and the role of MIBs and OIDs.
